Prostate gland an exocrine gland of the male reproductive system is situated on the lower abdomen underneath the urinary bladder. It produces necessary fluids that carry sperm.
Prostate Resection Surgery can be performed via various techniques. The technique depends on the size of prostate, cause of enlargement and medical condition of the patient.

Transurethral Electrovaportization (TUVP)
Open Prostatectomy is generally performed in case of severely enlarge prostate, bladder stones and bleeding from prostate. Otherwise, minimally invasive procedures are performed.
Indications of enlarged prostate are
Urgent and frequent need to urinate
Trouble starting urination
Recurring infections in urinary tract
Chronic blood in your urine
Bladder or kidney infection
Stones in bladder
Inability to control urination
Before surgery, your doctor will conduct some tests to check your bladder and urethra.
You may be asked not to eat or drink a few hours before the procedure.
Inform your doctor in case you’re put on any medication, especially if any blood thinning medication is being taken by you.
TURP is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. The procedure lasts about 1 to 2 hours depending on the type of technique used by your doctor.
During the surgery
A long thin scope (called resectoscope) will be inserted through the opening of the penis. The scope will be allowed to traverse from bladder into the tube that carries the urine. The scope will determine the excess prostate tissues.
In Open Prostatectomy, an incision will be made below the navel area and prostate will be accessed. Excess tissues causing blockage will be removed. Incision will be sutured.
In Laser Prostatectomy, a laser will be passed through the scope. Laser generate intense heat to remove the excess tissues either by melting or cutting the tissues.
In Transurethral Needle Ablation, needles will be passed into the prostate. High frequency sound waves will be used to heat the needles that will cut the tissues.
In Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy, a microwave scope will be used to pass heat to precisely destroy the tissues.
In Transurethral Electrovaprorization, electric current will be used to resect the excess tissues.
After the procedure, a tube will be placed in your bladder for a few hours to drain the urine.
If open surgery is conduted a catheter will remain in your bladder for about 5 to 10 days, in case of minimally invasive techniques the catheter will be insterted for a few hours.
After open prostatectomy, the patients have to stay back in hospital for a few days while in other cases the patients can go back home in a day.

You will not be able to drive for a 7 to 10 day. You can resume normal routine (including sexual activites) after 6 to 8 weeks.
