Ovary Removal Surgery, also called Oophorectomy, is a procedure in which one or both the ovaries are surgically removed. Ovaries are an important reproductive organ that stores and releases eggs responsible for fertilization and produces hormones that control menstrual periods.
Oophorectomy is generally done in conjunction with other uterus removal surgery (hysterectomy). Oophorectomy is commonly called Ovary Removal Surgery.
The procedure is recommended by the doctor in case of
Benign tumor in the ovary
Endometriosis - a condition in which a tissue that normally grows inside the uterus, has grown outside.
Twisting of ovaries
Twisting of ovaries
When hormones produced by the ovaries increase the possibility of breast cancer
Abnormalities in genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2 are suspected to develop ovarian cancer before the age of 70
To prepare for the surgery, the doctor may suggest
Fasting for 8 to 12 hours prior to the surgery
Drinking laxative a before the surgery, to clear the intestines
Stop taking certain medicines
Ovary Removal Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and generally takes about 1 to 2 hours. Depending on the expected complexity, the doctor will either choose open or laparoscopic surgery.
During the surgery:
In open surgery, an incision is made across the abdomen to access the ovaries. Ovaries will be separated from the blood vessles and the tissues around it. Ovaries will be surgically removed and incision will be sutured.
In laparoscopic surgery, a thin tube along with a small camera and specialized equipment is passed through one or more incisions in the abdomen. Then, each ovary will be removed from its surrounding tissue and the blood supply to put in a pouch. The pouch will be taken out of your abdomen through one of the minor incisions.
In most cases, the patients are able to go back home in 1 to 2 days after the surgery. Complete recovery takes around 4 to 6 weeks.
After the surgery, the doctor will recommend to refrain from doing any strenuous physical tasks including sexual activites.
If both the ovaries are removed but the uterus is not, then in most cases the patient can get pregnant through In Vitro Fertilization technique.
Risk and Complications
