Kyphoplasty is a minimal invasive surgery performed to repair spine fractures (vertebral compression fractures) by injecting bone cement. The procedure is similar to Vertebroplasty.
The approach in Kyphoplasty involves the use of a small balloon that is inflated to create a void prior to injecting bone cement. After a void is successfully created the procedure continues in the same manner to that of a vertebroplasty.
This surgical procedure is recommended:
To repair vertebral compression fracture (spinal fractures) caused due to osteoporosis or any spinal injury
As palliative treatment for spinal tumor
To treat spinal injury
The doctor may recommend the following:
A thorough physical exam and routine tests
Fasting for 8 to 10 hours prior to the surgery
Stopping blood thinners, at least 10 days before the surgery
MRI to check the exact location of the fracture and plan the best treatment
The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia, and might take upto 2 hours.
During the procedure,
A biopsy needle is guided into the fractured vertebra by the help of fluoroscopic x-ray.
A balloon is injected via the needle, into the bone, and then inflated. This restores the height of the vertebrae.
This is followed by injecting a cement-like substance into the space created due to the fractured bone.
The bone cement hardens in approximately 10 minutes. This congels the fragments of the fractured bone and provides stabilization to the collapsed bone.
The needle is removed and skin puncture is bandaged.
After the procedure is complete, the patient is made to rest for 2 to 3 hours. Generally, the patient is discharged on the same day.
After the discharge, the doctor will recommend the patient to
Medically manage osteoporosis so as to prevent spinal fracture
Avoid strenuous activities for 3 to 4 weeks
Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption
Take dietary supplements (eg. calcium, vitamin D)
Risk and Complications
Although vertebroplasty is a safe procedure, certain complications may occur. Commonly known complications are:
Bone cement leakage
